Days full of sun and nights lit past 10 PM – this is the season Alaska residents relish. The Anchorage Botanical Garden is undertaking its volunteer recruitment drive and first clean-up of the the gardens, many nurseries are featuring sales, and even the Municipality has been holding Wednesday lunch sales of its extra plants. In our own gardens, bulbs are announcing their early-season presence as the hope of summer blooms!
Anchorage, called the City of Flowers, is renown for its downtown hanging baskets and area plantings. Visit the Municipality Greenhouse at Russian Jack Park for a preview of the plants that will soon beckon tourists and residents alike to pose for photos by one of the 460+ flowerbeds and baskets! In just a few weeks, the Festival of Flowers will be the talk of the town.
Other activities such as annual bird counts and viewings are also underway. The cranes have returned to the Turnigain Arm flats; Trumpeter swans will soon be gracing Potter Marsh.
