The Professional Association of Innkeepers International campaign, A Better Way to Stay, is underway. Today, PAII reviewed a video on social networking that cites the changes including this: did you know that Gen Yers outnumber Baby Boomers and that 96% of them belong to one or more social networks?
At the same time, PAII, reports
Research shows that B&Bs and country inns are sorely misunderstood. We’re here to explain why B&Bs are a better way to stay. Younger travelers think B&Bs are for “oldies” and others believe the B in B&B stands for boutique or expensive.
By raising awareness of Bed & Breakfast accommodations, PAII is advocating for the industry in an era of changing demographics. Times are changing, and so are the avenues by which we get the word out about our products and services. When we have the support of organizations such as PAII, we can amass resources, create one voice, and launch media that will reach a sizeable audience, much as PAII intends to do with this campaign.
Did you know a search of ‘bed and breakfast’ on YouTube finds 5,230 videos posted – most of which are public relations or advertising by individual inns? Better yet – people are uploading 35 hours of video to YouTube per minute as of this month.
Bed and breakfast innkeepers of the Anchorage Alaska Bed & Breakfast Association are keenly aware of the changes. Most of these B&Bs have thus added amenities requested by younger travelers, including Internet access and secure networks for guests. And more and more innkeepers are using the social networking media to connect with Gen Y travelers. Lest you think technology is the realm of the youth, know that AARP reported researched by the Pew Internet & American Life Project that the fastest social networking growth is fueled by the more mature crowd!
Bottom line: travelers, know that B&Bs are keeping pace with the telecommunications and Internet revolution. Look for us on your favorite social networking channel or search engine. And innkeepers, listen to what travelers (of any age!) are saying. Help travelers to know more about B&B accommodations by supporting joint efforts such as PAII’s Better Way to Stay campaign. And keep learning about new communication channels. They give a ‘better way to stay….connected’ with our guests! If we – travelers and innkeepers both – engage in online dialogue, we will change those misconceptions and will increase B&B otions as a viable choice for those seeking wonderful experiences at their travel destinations.
